Publishers beware

Do you publish an ezine?

What format do you use? Text or HTML? Is your newsletter sent to your list in its entirety or do you use an online version and simply send a notification. Perhaps you even have your newsletter available for download in PDF format.

Of course all of these things can be done but just because they can be done doesn't mean that they should be. From a readers point of view it is great to have a *choice* of formats. Whilst it is useful to publish newsletters online especially for adding content to your site and for archival purposes, I for one prefer good old fashioned text emails.

Why?

1. They are light weight in terms of file size.

2. I can read them offline. This is important for readers who pay per minute for online access. It is also important for when I want to be able to readily access the email. It is faster for me to locate an email in my email program than it is to go online.

Finding a specific article that you may have previously read online from an archive (unless the archive has a good search function) can be very difficult if it can be found at all.

3. I have the option of storing the ezine in an organized way on my hard drive. This increases its accessabilty and I don't have to worry about the added steps of cutting and pasting from online to a text document, selecting a print version or emailing it to myself.

By all means have an online version. Have a PDF version if you want. Send me a notification email that the latest issue is online *and* send me the whole issue. Choice is where it is at. Is it more work for the publisher? Yes! But are you likely to have an increased readership? Yes!
