Like many netizens I spend a lot of time reading on the net
and visiting a l-o-t of websites.
I know you have been exposed to animated banners and images but there is a limit. I have just come from a site that has an animated to banner and and three animated gifs at the side.
The goal of the advertisers is to attract my attention. The
webmaster may have many goals which may include actually
reading the content.
Animation distracts from content (in my humble opinion).
If the goal of the webmaster is to monetize their site and have you click on a link, then perhaps they will achieve that but will the visitor come back?
Can there be images that link to other sites and offers? Sure!
But I need time to orient my self to the site. When I am trying to figure out what the site is about I need to read some content; not just be flashed at with multiple changing images that my brain needs to filter out so that I can focus on the content.
That's tiring.
At my sites I want *my* visitors to stay a while *and* come back. If my site has a primary focus of having visitors take a specific action then I want the visitors to take that action and not be distracted.
What was once a novel and interesting method for achieving
visitor action now has diminished effectiveness.
So, limit the use of animation on your site. It will pay greater dividends.
