DokuWiki

In using and evaluating DokuWiki, so far I like the ease of creating new pages and organizing and reorganizing the filing system. Also the ability to create files locally as text files and then upload the new pages perhaps in new folders and for everything to automatically be linked together through the powerful index system. (In the default layout there is an index link at the bottom right in the bottom navigation bar. This didn't make sense to me so I altered the template to put it at the top left in my own installation.).

One thing I am as yet undecided on is the whole page layout with no columns - good for a manual but not quite as visually appealing as having a left or right navigation as well.

However there is a one click return to either the "start" page from the breadcrumb menu or to the "index" of all folders adn documents. The "start" page can function as a contents page.

Access control is another important feature for my use. Mostly I want to control the content for a manual or assign privileges if someone wants to contribute. DokuWiki can do this easily.

DokuWiki also generates an RSS Feed. I am still exploring this function and it looks promising as a way for readers (e.g. site members) to stay updated with developing changes in the Wiki documents.

Finally, DokuWiki provides the ability to enable URL rewriting if your host permits it. This can contribute to search engine friendly URLs and better ranking in search engine listings.
