Long Term SEO - Building for the Future

© by Noel Springer

Everyone wants instant results, I know I do ;-) All site owners want more traffic, I know I do.

So ingenious people invented scripts that would generate 1,000s of pages, many of which were indexes linking to the other indexes and without a lot of useful content.

A few months back I was interested in finding out the protein content of eggs. I did a search for "protein content egg" and came up with a list of page of the type described above. Many of these indexes only have the search term appearing once or twice and there is no content on the topic - just more links.

Insightful people who use these scripts will add additional useful content, publish fewer pages per day or week and alter the standard templates to provide unique content.

I am not suggesting that these types of scripts shouldn't be used at all; just not out of the box.

And since my original search was for a genuine enquiry I was more than a little put out by the run-a-round that I was forced to take. In fact the first time I ran the search I simply couldn't find the information. It took some different search terms on another day.

So how many other people are like me? Definitely out of the millions of searches some people are guaranteed to be as peeved as I was. And if someone stumbled on your site with hundreds of pages of indexes, would they ever come back? Is it really worth just the few people who "may" click on an AdSense ad or PPC link?

Well over many sites yes but it is short term thinking.

About a month ago I ran that same search out of curiosity and none of the same pages were listed. Their numbers are deceasing as Google and other engines figure out what is junk and how to detect it. It seems these pages can confer short term gains but long term damage.

Here is a comment from a friend that sums it up beautifully.

"If you want the best tip of all, build a site that you would want to visit yourself. A site that contains useful information, is organized clearly and keep making it better and you will have a site that generates income today, tomorrow, next year and the year after that."
